The Aztecs first encountered Cortes and thought he was the sun god (Quetzalcoatl).
Cortez had many advantages on the Aztecs. For one, when he first got there, the Aztecs thought he was their god Quetzelcoatl. They took him in which allowed him to get into the city. They were a more primative civilization so they did not have the weapons that Cortez had.

Cortez had many advantages on the Aztecs. For one, when he first got there, the Aztecs thought he was their god Quetzelcoatl. They took him in which allowed him to get into the city. They were a more primative civilization so they did not have the weapons that Cortez had.
The Aztecs didn't attack Cortes and his men at first because they did think that he was a god. But after Cortes captured the priest or leader, he masacured many Aztecs and conquered their land.
When the Mexico (Aztecs) first encountered Cortes, they thought him to be from one of their prophecies. Giving the Spaniards permission to walk as they pleased through the whole empire. Although they soon realized that they weren't really from the prophecy, they still didn't fight them until Cortes and his men started killing them. Mainly the Spanish were weak; if it weren't for the Tlaxcalan and many other native tribes the Spanish wouldn't have done well from the beginning.
The first time he attacked the Aztecs, he took advantage of Montezuma's (Aztec leader) hospitality, taking him prisoner. This led to Hernan Cortes controlling the Aztecs, until they rebelled, finally forcing Hernan Cortes out. Cortes then waited for more Spanish troops to arrive, and when they did, going back to attack the Aztecs, but this time completely demolishing their city of Tenochtitlan.
When Hernan Cortes first arrived in Tenochtitlan in 1519, Moctezuma, the ruler of the Aztecs, agreed to let Cortes stay. However, a year later, in 1520, the Aztecs rose and threw Cortes out of the city. Later on, Moctezuma was killed, most probably by the Aztecs. Later on, in 1521, Cortes came back with his army, and he defeated the Aztecs with the help of: Metal armor Smallpox (people think that more than 1,000 Aztecs died because of Smallpox) Muskets Horses (the Aztecs had never seen horses before, and they got frightened) Allies
