Mormons eventually settled everywhere! There are over 14 million members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) all over the world, and Mormon congregations are found in almost every nation.
The headquarters of the Church has been located in Salt Lake City, Utah since 1847. At the time church headquarters moved there, nearly all Mormons moved there as well. However, since that time, the Church has continued to grow and expand. Approximately 10% of all Mormons live in Utah today.
The center of the Mormon settlement in the west was Salt Lake City. This is where Church headquarters was (and still is) located and also the center of government. However, individual Mormons were scattered all over the west and founded hundreds of cities and towns which are still thriving today. Most of these were located in what is nicknamed the "Mormon Curtain" - Idaho, Utah, Arizona, and areas of Canada and Mexico bordering these states. Some went to Nevada, California, Oregon, and other states as well.

Brigham Young became president of the Mormon church when Joseph Smith died. The Mormons needed a safe place to practice their religion. The Mormons had been kicked out of every other place they had tried to settle. At the time, Utah was a part of Mexico, and they wanted to escape the United States government. Also, before Joseph Smith died he told Brigham that the Saints would eventually have to move west to the Rocky Mountains. Because every where else that Mormons tried to settle were chased out and abused. So the Mormons went west to seek a place where they could practice their religion without being provoked.
