Why does clipping a tall thin plant turn it into a bush?

oh you see this is because you are cutting off the tip of the plant ..where auxin is produced! without auxin(plant hormone) the plant would not grow and so it would start becoming bushy from sides cause it cant grow ! :)

Im going to improve the answer from before because its a bit rubbish! Auxin is a hormone found mainly at the tip of a plant which helps it grow towards the sun for photosynthesis. When sunlight shines on one side of the plant it will destroy some of the auxin. The other side of the plant wont be in the sunlight, it will be in the shade, so it will have more auxin. This means the shaded side of the plant will grow more than the lit side, so the plant will grow towards the light source. This gives the plant a better chance of survival as it can photosynthesise more. :D

this is called a tropism, where the growth of a plant in a particular stimulus, (light in this case). A chemical called auxin causes the elongation of cells. When a shoot is illuminated from one side, auxin is transported down the shaded side. This shaded side then elongates more rapidly than the illuminated side, causing the shoot to bend towards the light. Also the stimulus(light) must be detected by the tip of the plant shoot or root.
