As the Confederacy was organizing itself in the early months of 1861, they were able to take control of Federal forts without bloodshed. And, President Lincoln had not yet taken office. Fort Sumter and the battle to capture it began a quick process that sparked the US Civil War. Sitting in the Charleston, South Carolina harbor, the fort commander refused to surrender. When finally he had no choice, President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to enlist for 3 months and end the Southern rebellion. With this action four other Southern states, most importantly Virginia decided to join the Confederacy. It was now eleven states strong.
After the siege and surrender of the Union Fort Sumter, US President Lincoln wanted to end the Southern rebellion as fast as he could. Both sides expected the rebellion to not last long. Because of that belief, Lincoln only called for 75, 000 volunteers to be enlisted for only three months. Meanwhile the Confederacy had grown larger as four more states joined the South.
It began on 13 August 1918 with the enlistment of Opha Mae Johnson.
it began in early America with Abraham Lincoln
The events leading to the beginning of the US Civil War began on April 12, 1861. Confederate forces bombarded US Fort Sumter in the Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. The fort was forced to surrender. President Lincoln then called for 75,000 volunteers to end the Southern Rebellion. The US Supreme Court ruled that the conflict officially began in July 1861 when Lincoln called the US Congress together to authorize funds and supplies to end the rebellion. For the South the war began in May of 1861, when the Confederate congress recognized that a state of war existed between the Confederate States of America and the United States.
