US presidential elections are held every four years , in years divisible by 4,

The newly elected president takes office on January 20 of the year following the election. The incumbent president may run for re-election one time. The next presidential election will be in 2012. President Obama is eligible to serve another term if he runs and is elected again. The US is certain to elect a new president in 2016 .
