Inventing the incandescent light bulb was the easy part. The harder part was

finding materials to construct it with so that it would last for a reasonable length

of time before it burned out. Nobody would buy a light bulb if they knew that it

would only last for a day or two and they'd need to buy another one after that.

The little tiny wire in the light bulb that radiates visible light is called the 'filament'.

In order to make it radiate light, electric current is passed through it to make it

super-hot.

If you take a skinny piece of wire and connect it between the terminals of a

battery, it'll get hot immediately, and just like the filament in a light bulb, it'll

radiate heat and glow with light. And then it'll melt in the middle and fall apart

in two pieces. The big trick with the light bulb is to be able to build it in such

a way that the filament in the bulb can stay super hot, and glow with light, for

hundreds of hours WITHOUT melting and falling apart, and still keep working.

THAT was Thomas Edison's big accomplishment.

The first thing he realized is that if the hot wire is not surrounded by air, then

it can cook much longer without melting. So for all his experiments with electric

light bulbs, he always pumped the air out of the bulb and sealed it, so that his

filaments operated in vacuum. Even today with a modern incandescent bulb,

if the bulb cracks, then it immediately burns out, because as soon as air seeps

in and hits the filament, it's >POOF<, and that's the end of THAT bulb.

The rest of the project was to find a material for the filament that would last the

longest, and that's really the story about Edison that best shows the kind of

perseverence he had. His lab notebooks show that he built bulbs with more than

400 different kinds of materials for their filaments, experimented with each one,

and kept careful records of how each one performed and how long it lasted,

before he picked the substance that was best to build light bulbs with that were

rugged and would last a while.

The story I heard about that process that I like the best says that somebody

asked Edison whether he was depressed and discouraged by how many times

he tried and failed to find the solution to the problem, and Edison laughed a

jolly, happy laugh, and said something to the effect of "Gosh no! Look at

everything I've discovered that nobody ever knew before! Now I know more

than 400 different substances and materials thatwon't work as filaments!"

What is meant by a solution in search of a problem?

A solution in search of a problem is a saying used to describe a design or proposal that lacks purpose. Typically, a design is created as a solution to a tangible problem that will be solved or alleviated by the solution. Without first identifying a problem to solve, the designer could become very frustrated by the lack practical application for his design.

What are the difference phases of decision making?

According to Simon (1977), Intelligence, Design, And Choice, known as IDC are the phases of Decision making process. In the intelligence phase, decision situation is studied, figure out severity of problem, ownership of the problem. In the design phase, design of solutions for the problem is created. In the choice phase, one of the best solution from the different designed solutions are selected.
