As my memory recalls, the Galealean thermometrer consisted of several glass globes suspended in a liquid [water?]. When the temperature increases the glass balls rise (get bigger).

They rise because they increase in volume and occupy less space and therefore become more boyuant.

Conformation of my initial belief in this answer took about 45 seconds by way of a Google query. try it!

Which thermometer would register a more accurate reading one with a maximum temperature of 110 degrees celsius or one that registers temperatures up to 300 degrees celsius?

You should use a thermometer where the average temperature you are measuring is somewhere near the middle of the range of your thermometer, and with the narrowest band possible that still keeps the limiting temperatures inside 10-90% of its range. For example, if you are measuring something that is expected to be within 95-105 degrees, you should pick a thermometer that reads 94-106 degrees, or something close to that. If you are cooking a turkey, this same 94-106 degree thermometer would be highly inaccurate.

Is the south pole on the land or just off the coast in the sea?

The Earth's South Pole is situated on land (or rather on Ice which is covering land), near the middle of the continent of Antarctica. The Earth's North Pole is situated in the sea (or rather on Ice which is floating on the sea), near in the middle of the Arctic Ocean.

Is there land at the north pole or is it in water?

The North Pole sits on a floating ice sheet which is called the Arctic ice sheet. There is no land underneath it, but the sea depth at the North Pole has been measured at 4,261 metres (13,980 ft). Because of this, the North Pole is incapable of supporting any plant or animal life on it.
