Many cats reach sexual maturity around six months old - when they are still kittens themselves. It is not recommended for kittens to mate and become pregnant as this is potentially very dangerous (if not fatal) to the mother and developing kittens.
Simple answer: Unless you and your female are qualified breeders and the male cat is a qualified stud cat, your female cat (and the male cat) should be spayed. It will not only cease uncomfortable heat cycles, but prevent certain serious medical problems in the future.
