You should talk softly so the horse knows you are there.

And you should stay at least 6 feet away from the hindquarters.

Talk quietly so the horse knows you are there. If you don't really know the horse then walk behind them atleast 6 feet, so they aren't able to reach out and kick you if they feel threatened, and also talk to them in a soothing voice. But if you and the horse are familier with each other then you can walk right behind them but make sure you have your hand on their butt so they know your there instead of getting spooked and kicking out.

First of all, keep your hand on the animal so that it knows you are still there. The reason horses get spooked a lot is that the information seen by the right and left eyes are not shared. In other words, if you are on the right side of a horse and walk behind it, it thinks you are gone, then when you reappear on the left side it gets startled....That's the point of keeping your hand on it so it knows your there. Also make sure you talk to the horse in a soft comforting voice so they stay calm.

** Yes, keep contact with the horse with a hand. Also it is a good idea to stay close to the horse. A kick will only push you away and not hurt, whereas if you stood further away, the kick will be more forceful.

This isn't that dangerous. Just don't do it to a horse you met in the woods or something. you should place your hand firmly (not to hard) on the horse and as you walk around your hand should stay on the horse. keep talking to the horse and never run around a horse.

***

If it's not your horse, stay extra far away from the horses rump so it can't kick you accidentally. Also walk sort of on the side of the horse so the horse can see you. Do not make any sudden sounds or movement as to not startle the horse. Also, it would be a good idea to talk (not shout) constantly so the horse knows you're there.
You never want to just walk right behind a horse if they dont know you are there because they might kick you... to be safe you always want to put your hand on their back and slid it down to their croup and when you are walking behind them keep it there until you are on the other side.
When walking behind a horse you should either walk at least 6 feet behind them or keep one side of your body against the horses rump while talking softly to the horse (even if it makes you embarrassed).

Yes that is right but if your riding a horse or someone is leading it walk about a baby elephant behind or to the side so the horse can see that ur not a predator stalking it

never

when u r going behind the horse keep on patting it starting at the hindquarters than keep on patting the horse till you get all the way around it!!!

Dont make any loud noises or sudden movements, as they can kick. Hard.

You shouldn't walk behind a horse if you don't have to, but if you do, then you should start at his/her head, keeping contact at all times, slowly moving down, always stroking his/her side, and talking to him/her, so s/he knows where you are, until you are where you need to be.

watch where you step

If you want to walk behind a horse, then you can either walk 4-5 feet away from the behind or walk as close as you want, but lay your hand a foot above the tail. That way the horse will know that you are there and trying now to scare him/her and hurt you. Have fun!

Well, if possible, just walk in front of them.If you mean walk behind them as in following them, don't. They might think that you are stalking(as in hunting) them. Remember, they have the fight or flight instinct. It you mean just to go to the other side of them, again, it is easier to just go in front. But if there are other horses in front of them, then just let them know that you are there. While you are walking, just lightly pat there back, in a friendly way. Or, if there is alot of room behind them, you can always just make a bigger circle around them, so that you are out of the reach of their legs. But most horses will not kick. I mean, if they are wild, or bad-tempered they might. But I have only seen a horse kick twice. Once in that 'Live above the influance' commercails, when the kids pull the ponies' tail, and the other when a mare bit the horse in front of her, and she got kicked(she was fine). Mostly horses kick each other.

You should always walk around the front of a horse where he can see you. A horse might accidentally kick a person if startled because he cannot see directly behind him. If you need to work near a horse's hind end, put a hand on the horse's side and/or speak to him so he is aware you are there. Stay as close as possible to the horse; the closer you are, the less power he can put into a kick.

You should definitely let him know you are coming by speaking and being sure you have his attention. Horses are flight animals and could start or kick if startled.

Should you stand at least six feet behind a horse when walking behind it?

Not necessarily, as long as you put your hand on the horse while walking around it, the horse knows your there and you do not startle it, you should be okay. If the horse is known to kick at people, then you would be better walking in front than behind.AnswerIf you cannot walk, for some reason) in front of the horse then, yes it is better to walk at least six feet behind the horse. Talk to the horse at all times in a soothing, calm voice. While walking alongside it and behind it, keep your hand on it's body so it knows where you are. Do not walk up behind a horse without talking to it, otherwise, you will probably get kicked.

Should you be close to the horse's hindquarters when walking behind a horse?

No. You should never walk close to a horse's hindquarters. Stay at least 5 to 7 feet behind. Even if the horse is not a "kicker" any horse can be frightened and their reflexes are so fast you would not have time to get out of the way.
