Dracula was first written about in 1897 by Bram Stoker. He is the one that started it all. Although Dracula is a work of fiction it does contain some historical references.

However, it must be noted that 25 years prior to Bram Stoker's Dracula a Gothic Novella was published by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu in 1872. It tells the story of a young woman's susceptibilaty to the attentions of a female vampire "Carmilla". As stated, "Carmilla" (also the title) predates Bram Stoker, however, it is about a female "vampire" and not specifically "Dracula" himself.

The legend (as most of us know it today) was originated from Bram Stokers 1897 Novel.
