The first colony on St. Thomas was founded by the Danish West India Company in 1671. The island was claimed for Denmark by a group of Danish settlers, who established a settlement known as Charlotte Amalie, named after a Danish queen. This marked the beginning of Danish colonial rule in the U.S. Virgin Islands, which lasted for several centuries.
