Right out of nurse's training in England, Edith Cavell [December 4, 1865-October 12, 1915] was appointed matron of the Berkendael Institute of Brussels. The Institute was taken over by the Red Cross during World War I. And during those years, Cavell helped Allied soldiers get out of occupied Belgium, and into the neutral Netherlands. On August 3, 1915, she was arrested for 'harboring' Allied soldiers. Ten weeks later, she was executed, by firing squad, as a spy. She was buried on the spot, at the present Tir National state military site. On March 17, 1919, her body was exhumed and brought back to England, for subsequent burial at Life's Green, on the east end of the Norwich Cathedral.
