Henry Hopkins Sibley (1816-1876) was born May 25, 1816 in Natchitoches, Louisiana. He was raised in Missouri, graduated from West Point, and served in several positions as a US Army officer. He resigned his commission in 1861 and led the Southern armies in the ultimately unsuccessful New Mexico campaign in 1862.
