Robert Nathaniel Dett was one of the first African American composers. Dett, a resident of Canada, began playing the piano at the age of three and relentlessly pursued his musical education and career. He was the first composer to combine European classical music with Negro spiritual and folk music. Throughout his career, Dett persevered despite racism. Most of his work was done at all black centers of higher learning. In 1937, NBC interrupted a broadcast of his concert because it's believed listeners in the United States were offended by a black man playing a concert.
