== == == == == == == == == == Do not forget that this was the first Anglo-American invasion, the British 78th Division landing with the US 34th Division, in the eastern task force, aimed at Algiers.

== == Sorry for the insulting comment. I assume you refer to when the Americans landed in North Africa on 8 November 1942. The Americans landed on the Western portion of North Africa so that they could assist the British 8th Army by getting behind the Germans. They landed in Algiers which was a French colony and since France had surrendered to the Germans, they were allies to them and were supposed to fight against any country that was enemies to Germany.

So the Americans had to fight the French soldiers. They had previously tried to make contact with some of their leaders and convince them to surrender so there would not be needless bloodshed. Still, there was some heavy fighting for a could of weeks before the Vichy French government surrendered to the Americans. Also, there was ill feeling between the French and British. So the Americans were selected for the invasion of Algiers in hopes that the French would be willing to surrender to the Americans and would not be further insulted by surrendering to the British.
