William Penn founded Pennsylvania (hence the name) in 1681. The King of England owed his father a lot of money, and instead of giving him the money he gave him a huge plot of land in the newly 'discovered' colonies. William Penn was a Quaker and for its first years, Pennsylvania was a primarily Quaker area.
