It is located inSriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, India,80 km (50 mi) north of Chennai in South India. It was originally called Sriharikota High Altitude Range (SHAR), and was sometime known asSriharikota Launching Range. The centre was renamed to its present name in 2002 after the death of ISRO's former chairman Satish Dhawan. The space centre has kept the title SHARduring these name changes.
