Sydney was not "discovered". Modern cities are not discovered: only the site where they are built can be discovered.The site where Sydney is now located was discovered by Governor Arthur Phillip in January 1788. As Captain of the First Fleet of convicts to Australia, he was supposed to settle at botany Bay. Discovering that Botany Bay did not offer the resources required to establish a new settlement, Phillip did a reconnaissance mission north, coming across Port Jackson, where Sydney is now located.
