William Howard Taft, the twenty-seventh President of the United States, served just a single term in office, between March 4, 1909 and March 4, 1913. He was not re-elected in 1912, and the election campaign of that year put great strains on the friendship of himself and Theodore Roosevelt, who finished second in the 1912 election, pushing Taft into third place.
