Animation of some sort or another has been around for over 250 years, ever since it was discovered how to make 'flick-book' pictures. A long series of drawings could be produced, in which the figures or scenes represented were each in a slightly different position than they were in the picture beforehand. When these pictures were then rapidly skimmed or thumbed through, the images appeared to move. This technique was used in the 18th Century 'zoetropes' - revolving drums with a series of pictures arranged in a strip around the inside, which also had slits in the side that the observer could look through. When the drum was spun, the slits merged together to form a viewing aperture, and the images inside (which could be galloping horses, acrobats on hoops etc.) appeared to move in a lifelike fashion. These were really the first 'cartoons'. This technique was developed in Victorian times following the advent of Photography and magic lanterns, to provide animated images that could be projected, or flick-photographs that could make up short stories and shown in hand-cranked amusement machines. The first cartoon FILMS appeared just before the First World War- these used the same principle of a long series of images, in which was slightly different in each frame of the film. The technique was improved upon over the next 15 years, until the first full-length cartoon film (a silent movie starring Mickey Mouse in his first appearance), was released by Hollywood in the early 1920's. The first Talking cartoon film, another Mickey Mouse story called 'Steamboat Willie', came out in 1928. The basic method of animation-making remained unchanged for decades (indeed it was the only known method), although improvements in movie technology allowed for a greater number of frames to be screened in a shorter period of time, enabling animated imagery to be seen to 'move' more smoothly and realistically. By the mid-1930s, animation makers perfected the technique of model animation, taking a long series of still photographs of real models or still objects in a slightly different position each time, which when all run together as a film made the images seem to come to life. By the early 1980s, computer graphic imagery began to offer a possible alternative to traditional animation, as well as providing images that could be lifelike enough to seem to merge in with real-life surroundings. Early examples of this in use can be seen in the film 'Ghostbusters' and in the video to Michael Jackson's song 'Thriller', amongst others. There was also a late-night magazine programme presented by a completelyanimated character called 'Max Headroom', that was hugely popular at around the same time. Nowadays, CGI (computer graphic imagery) has largely taken over the field of animated films and TV programmes, although cartoons are still made in many countries using the older technology. The cult animation of English artist David Parks (who created the 'Wallace and Gromit' characters, as well as the film 'Chicken Run') remains a huge success, despite it's use of old-style model animation.
