The following excerpts were taken from my ASL textbook "Signing Naturally":For over 250 years, ASL has evolved in the U.S. and Canada as the means for Deaf people to express and share their ideas, needs and thoughts.

Since the mid-1960s when linguists recognized ASL as a distinct language (something that was true all along, but only "discovered" in the 1960s), a growing number of hearing people have elected to learn ASL in major colleges, universities, and high schools throughout the country.

There is evidence that in the 1600s some of the inhabitants of Martha's Vineyard off Cape Cod had a genetic pool that resulted in a large number of deaf people in the community. This in turn resulted in naturally formed signing communities on the island.

Hope this helps. The book was written by Cheri Smith/Ella Mae Lentz/Ken Mikos and is the Units 1-6 edition.

Who invented ASL?

American Sign Language (ASL) was not invented by a single person; it evolved naturally over time within Deaf communities in the United States. However, many credit Laurent Clerc, a Deaf teacher from France, and Thomas Gallaudet, a hearing educator, for bringing French Sign Language to the U.S. and laying the foundation for ASL.

How do you say 'because' in asl?

Answer from Summershorti:I take ASL classes, and I don't think there is a "because" in ASL language. You know, in ASL the language is different so there are variations. In ASL, the term 'because' is the exact same as the sign for 'why'. In ASL, a lot of statements are said by asking questionsExample: My name is Daniel"MY-NAME-WHAT-D-A-N-I-E-L"
