Best Answer

The Siege of Savannah occurred in 1779, as the British were besieged by a combination of American, French and Haitian forces. The Allies were attempting to retake Savannah, which had fallen to the British the previous year.

The Allied forces vastly outnumbered the British. The French Admiral Count D'Estaing curiously chose to lay siege to the city rather than simply march straight into battle, bombarding it with cannon and attempting to starve the city into submission. But the British dug in and prepared for a fight.

On October 9th, 1779, the Allies attacked in a predawn assault. The battle was a disaster from an Allied standpoint, and they were repulsed with massive casualties in a battle called by many the "bloodiest hour of the Revolution."

The British held Savannah until the end of the Revolution.
