On April 26, 1865.
On April 26, 1865, at approximately 2am, Booth was caught hiding in a tobacco barn near Port Royal, Virginia, with his accomplice, David Herald, by a Union Calvary. Booth and Herald were given the opportunity to surrender; Herald surrendered but Booth refused. The barn was set on fire, and Sergeant Boston Corbett caught a glimpse of Booth, when peaking through the wood slats of the barn wall, and fired, hitting Booth in the neck. Booth was dragged out of the burning barn, not dead but paralyzed. He was then placed on the porch of the home belonging to Richard Garrett, the owner of the tobacco barn. Booth finally died at approximately 7am, the same morning.
