Jules Verne (French) l9th and ealry 20Th centuries) is generally considered the Father of Science Fiction. He wrote other genres, though such as Michael Strogoff which was straight out adventure about an IKGB Operative under the Czar. Aroudn the World in 80 Days (l872) is not strictly speaking science fiction. on the other hand 20,000 Leagues, Master of the World, Journey to the cneter of the Earth etc. are.

Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, written by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley in 1818 is considered by most to be one of the earliest, at least the earliest one most people can identify. There were earlier stories of various types that discussed people on other planets and similar fantasies, but this one has to a great extent come true. Organ transplants and the re-attachement of limbs is now common. Only the ability to transplant the brain remains to be solved.

Author and publisher Lester del Rey makes the case that the first work of science fiction was published somewhere between 2150-2000 BCE, The Epic of Gilgamesh. Gilgameshcontains no references to science or technology in a modern sense though, so more likely is specifically fantastic fiction (often thought of as a sub-genre of SciFi). A convincing argument can be made to support the Hindu religious texts Mahabharata and the Ramayana as the first science fiction texts. Mahabharata originates from 1100 BCE or before, and the Ramayana dates to possibly as late as the fifth century BCE. Mahabharata contains descriptions of flying machines and submarines as well as city-destroying weapons. Ramayana contains elements of time travel.

Lucian's references to interplanetary travel in True History make a case for the existence of science fiction as early as the second century BCE.

It is difficult to make any definitive identification of the first science fiction work, simply because of the nature of the genre. Science fiction is the only form or genre that can contain within it every other genre of literary work. For example:

  • The TV series Star Trek was most often presented as a western, but also served as morality play.
  • George Lucas' Star Wars is an opera and Medieval fantasy.
  • Riddley Scott's Alien franchise is Horror.
  • Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence is a fairy tale, literally a retelling of Pinocchio.
  • Stephen King's Dark Tower series is simultaneously a western, fantasy, and fairy tale. It could also be called a morality play and horror.
  • Tolkien's Hobbit and LOTR are both fantasies written in the traditional epic form, but also fall under SF.
  • The argument still rages regarding Terry Brooks' Shannara series, and Brooks has been non-communicative regarding his intent (with the exception of a single NPR interview). Is it fantasy or is it post-apocalyptic science fiction? Brooks' stand on the debate is that it can be either, and that he had no specific intent when he began writing it, but that he leans a bit toward the PA Science Fiction side.
  • Jules Verne and H.G.Wells, the grandfathers of modern science fiction, when they were producing, were writing fantastic fiction, but we recognize it today as bedrock modern science fiction.

It depends on your personal perspective. The experts in the field cannot agree, so you have to make up your own mind.

Science Fiction stories existed long before the term 'Science Fiction' was invented or even Science for that matter. Many authors have been credited with the distinction of being the father of science fiction including Lucian of Samosata (120AD). It can be argued however that the legends of Daedalus are a form of gadgetry science fiction which would push the start of SF all the way back into the Bronze age.

Science fiction has always been around. The earliest examples of it that I know of are the legends of Daedalus from the bronze age. These are clear examples of gadgetry science fiction.
