Ever since the Plessy vs. Fergusson case ruled "Separate, but equal" in 1896. It was only when the Civil Rights Movement came to a head that segregation started to decrease. Brown vs. Board of Education overturned Plessy vs. Ferguson in 1954 but it took over two decades for it to be implemented in the south.

Modern segregation is not a overt as it once was in the Jim Crow south, but it is even more insidious. Nearly every major city has predominately black and/or Hispanic areas that are crippled by poverty.
John F Kennedy had his fair share in helping deal with segregation. He helped Southern schools in the USA desegregate as they ignored judgements. Also including major sports teams as well which didn't want to be desegregated. Segregation in public places, buses, restaurants etc. remained.
