It was Solomon's father, David, who was first commanded to build the temple so that the Ark of the Covenant could be housed (and be a place for the Lord to rest). But David was not worthy, and so his son Solomon was given the responsibility. Jerusalem (Formally Salem) was captured by David and he chose it to be his capital. The temple was destroyed a number of times and rebuilt, only to be destroyed by the Romans, but actually it was destroyed by the babylonians in 586B.C.E when they sacked the city.

AnswerAround 1010 to 1005 BC.

According to The Bible, King Solomon built the First Temple in Jerusalem late in the tenth century BCE. However, scholars believe that the first Temple was actually built rather later, as Jerusalem was too small and impoverished at that time to build the magnificent structure believed to have existed until the time of the Babylonian Exile. Any temple built in the tenth century would have been a simpler, more temporary structure.

The Second Temple was built on the site of the First Temple after the Babylonian Exile, at the end of the sixth century BCE. It was rebuilt and extended by King Herod the Great in the first century BCE.

Jewish AnswerAccording to the Tanach (Jewish Bible) and supporting Jewish records, construction of the first Temple started in the year 2928 (827 BCE) and was completed in 2935 (827 BCE). This Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in 3338 (423 BCE).

Construction of the second Temple started in 3391 (370 BCE) but wasn't completed. Construction resumed in 3408 (353 BCE) and was completed in 3412 (349 BCE). In 3742 (19 BCE), restoration and renovations began under King Herod and were completed in 3750 (11 BCE). This Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 69 CE.

1 Kings 6New International Version (NIV) 1 Kings 6Solomon Builds the Temple1 In the four hundred and eightieth[a] year after the Israelites came out of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, the second month, he began to build the temple of the LORD.

Doing a little math, we know that the division of the Kingdom occurred after the death of Solomon in 930 BC. We also know that Solomon was King for 40 years. Allowing for this then, the 4th year of his reign would have been 966 BC.

One may also extract from the above Scripture that the time of the Exodus was 480 years before the start of the Temple in 966 BC or 1446 BC.
