Its generally agreed that the Army's birthday was June 14, 1775. That day the Second Continental Congress voted to adopt the force then keeping the British penned in Boston. That force was loosely amalgamated as the New England Army, and consisted of militia units which had flocked to the area after Lexington and Concord. The following day George Washington was commissioned by Congress to lead the army. Congress selected Washington, a southerner, in the hope of garnering wider support for the war. A few days later, before Washington could reach Boston, probably the bloodiest battle of the war took place at Bunker Hill.
