The Australian Five Dollar note was first issued on the 29th of May, 1967, over 15 months after the introduction of decimal currency on the 14th of February, 1966.

Although it was seen as an error of omission by many that it was not included in the original release of decimal banknotes, it was deliberately released later to allow a smooth transition from existing Pound notes to their equivalent Dollar notes.

The Five Dollar note was the equivalent of Two Pounds, Ten Shillings in the old currency.

Why is Joseph Banks on the Australian Five Dollar note?

Australia puts historically significant or famous Australian identities on its banknotes. Sir Joseph Banks appears on the obverse of the old paper Australian Five Dollar note issued from 1967 to 1991. He was a botanist and the President of the Royal Society and was influential in the early days of the administration of the Colony of New South Wales. He was on Captain Cooks voyage of discovery when Australia was "discovered" and was responsible for introducing the western world to some of Australia's native flora, some of which was subsequently named for him. There is a suburb in Canberra and three suburbs in Sydney named for him and an electoral division.

Who was the first person featured on United States money?

The first person to appear on US currency was the allegorical representation of Liberty, who appeared on coins from 1792 until 1945 when she last appeared on the Mercury dime. Abraham Lincoln was the first real person to appear on regular US coinage, when the first Lincoln cents issued in 1909. The first person to appear on a US coin, however, was on a commemorative quarter, in 1893; it was Queen Isabella I of Spain. In 1900, the first representations of real men appeared, Washington and Lafayette on a commemorative dollar. The first paper currency issued by the United States Treasury Department was issued in 1861. This money is called "demand notes," and was issued in denominations of five, ten, and twenty dollars. The five dollar note has a picture of Alexander Hamilton and a picture of the statue of Columbia on the Capitol Building, the ten dollar note has a portrait of Abraham Lincoln and an allegorical female representation of Art. The twenty dollar note had only a picture of Liberty. The first (and only?) actual woman to appear on US paper money was Martha Washington, who was on a couple different types of dollar bills. The Sioux Chief Onepapa once appeared on a five dollar bill. It was a handsome portrait, though he was given a Pawnee headdress to for artistic reasons.

What happened after Caroline Chisholm was put on the Australian Five Dollar note?

The Australian Five Dollar note was first issued in 1967, the year following the introduction of decimal currency. The Reserve Bank of Australia decided that Sir Joseph Banks would appear on the front of the note and that Caroline Chisholm would appear on the reverse. When the notes were issued into circulation, they stayed in circulation until 1992 when they were replaced by the polymer banknotes.

Why was Caroline Chisholm taken off the Australian Five Dollar note?

Caroline Chisholm appeared on the reverse of the old paper Five Dollar notes from their introduction in 1967 until their withdrawal in 1992. When we got the new polymer notes, a new design was made for each type and all Australian banknotes got new faces on them. The new polymer Australian Five Dollar note first issued in 1992, has Queen Elizabeth II on the front and old and new Parliament houses on the reverse. The Centenary of Federation Five Dollar note issued only in 2001, featured Sir Henry Parkes on the front and Catherine Helen Spence on the reverse.
