In 1898 for 109 days but that was only on paper. It made the world take notice, and the US became a recognized World Power. The Fly in the Ointment was that while the war had been won, the Peace had not. The Philippines felt a sense of betrayal since unlike Cuba they were not scheduled for immediate independence from Spain and the US. There was infighting, revolution and revolt within the country, factions existed, and no clear leadership was found that the US could turn the country over to. Theodore Roosevelt wanted the revolt ended "in no uncertain terms"which meant an escalation of violence, and the creation of new Rules of Engagement like "Kill everyone over 10". Old friends became new enemies and the Philippine American War began as the Spanish American War was put to rest.
