Although the area was heavily occupied during the Roman Era, the Domesday book of 1086 contains the first known record of a settlement named 'Bristelmestune' in the area that is today known as Brighton. That small settlement continued to thrive and by the 1640s was a fishing village with a population of over 4,000 known, by this time, as 'Brighthelmstone'. During themid 1700s, the village began attracting wealthy tourists, including royalty, thanks to medical publications proclaiming Brighton's waters to be extremely beneficial to one's health.
By the early 1800s, the 'Brighton Baths' had been built, the village had grown into a town and the name had been shortened to 'Brighton'. Over the next two centuries, the town continued to grow in industry and tourism and in 2001, Brighton was granted 'city' status by Queen Elizabeth II.
