Roanoke Island
John White attempted to set up Roanoke Island the second time. He led a group of colonists known as the "Lost Colony" in 1587, but when he returned to England for supplies and reinforcements, he was delayed by the Anglo-Spanish War. When he finally returned in 1590, the colonists had vanished, leading to the mystery of the Lost Colony.
The colony of Roanoke was set up by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1585, with John White leading the expedition.
Douglas Mawson set up a scientific research station on Macquarie Island to study the island's geology, biology, and meteorology. The station provided valuable data for understanding the Southern Ocean ecosystem and climate.

The Union forces, led by General Ambrose Burnside, won the Battle of Roanoke Island on February 8, 1862. This victory gave the Union control of a key strategic location on the North Carolina coast and opened up the opportunity to further advance into the Confederate territory.
Ralegh's settlement in what is now North Carolina was on Roanoke Island. It became known as 'the lost colony'. It was designated the Cittie of Ralegh, but the name never quite took hold because the colony failed.
