Colonies in Canada were established primarily by French and English explorers and settlers in the 16th and 17th centuries. The French, led by figures like Samuel de Champlain, founded Quebec in 1608, focusing on fur trade and alliances with Indigenous peoples. The English established their first permanent settlement in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607, and later expanded northward, founding colonies such as Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. These settlements were driven by economic interests, resource exploitation, and the desire for territorial expansion.

John White attempted to set up Roanoke Island the second time. He led a group of colonists known as the "Lost Colony" in 1587, but when he returned to England for supplies and reinforcements, he was delayed by the Anglo-Spanish War. When he finally returned in 1590, the colonists had vanished, leading to the mystery of the Lost Colony.
France set up its first permanent colonies along the St. Lawrence River and in Newfoundland.

Roanoke was the first English colony attempted in 1585, but it ultimately failed. Jamestown, established in 1607, became the first successful enduring English colony in North America.
The colony of Roanoke was set up by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1585, with John White leading the expedition.

The first English colonies in North America at Roanoke and Jamestown were set up in the hope of achieving profit, power, and spreading good ol' British influence. They were all about that colonial expansion life, trying to make a buck and show off their fancy European ways. Spoiler alert: things didn't always go as planned, but hey, at least they tried, right?
