Early reports reached the British and US governments from Polish resistance groups late in 1941 but were viewed with skeptism. Further information reached Britain and America in the course of 1942, and in November/December 1942 there was discussion in the press about what might be done.
In 1944 Vrba and Wetzler escaped from Auschwitz largely in order to inform the world. Their report to a leading Slovak Jewish group was sent to the Allies, who received it around mid 1944. This report was more detailed than previous reports. It was taken seriously and thunderous denunciations followed. It reached Britain and the US in June 1944, at the time when these countries were preoccupied with the Normandy landings ... Nevertheless, extracts were broadcast by the BBC on 15 and 20 June.
On 23 July 1944 Soviet forces liberated Majdanek, the first large camp to be freed and invited the Western media to visit it, which they did. On 28 August 1944 a full page article appeared in Life Magazine.
However, it is often said that it was the liberation of Bergen-Belsen, Buchenwald, Dachau and Mauthausen that really brought the Horror home to the British and American public.
The US government had known since late 1941/early 1942.
