1922 - 1924, under Andrew Bonar Law
When Neville Chamberlain returned from the Munich Conference in 1938, he held up the signed agreement to the crowd that greeted him at the Heston Aerodrome and boasted that it meant "Peace for our Time." The quote has become famous for its historical irony. A year later, Britain and France were at war with Germany.
Many historians consider Neville Chamberlain to be a weak leader. He is most famously known for his policy of appeasement towards Nazi Germany, which is seen as a failure in hindsight as it ultimately failed to prevent World War II. Chamberlain's approach to diplomacy and his failure to accurately assess Hitler's intentions have led to criticisms of his leadership abilities.
Appeasement. This did not become a 'dirty word' until it was used in the propaganda war to vilify Neville Chamberlain's policy. It has remained so ever since.
William Gladstone is mostly famous for serving as the prime minister four different times. However Gladstone has been successful in other ways. For instance Gladstone was also a British Liberal Statesmen. He was also the Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1852.
Winston Churchill didn't become British Prime Minister until 10 May 1940. War was declared by his predecessor Neville Chamberlain on 3 September 1939.
Winston Churchill was never a dictator, only a Prime Minister. He became that as he had been the only person to fully mistrust Hitler, and was therefore the only suitable replacement for Neville Chamberlain.
