Australia's first tramway was opened on the 23rd of December, 1861. It was horse-drawn and ran along Pitt Street, Sydney, from Redfern Railway Station to Circular Quay, and was capable of carrying up to 90 passengers. The tramway competed with local haulage businesses as a goods service as well as transporting passengers, who had previously used the earlier horse omnibus service which it had replaced. Although popular with passengers because of the smooth ride, it proved to be unpopular with other road users very quickly. The rails were manufactured in England and did not fit the wheels of the tramcars, so the rails were turned upside down to make a better fit. The rails subsequently protuded from the road surface, causing damage to the wheels of other vehicles. Constant protests led to the tramways closure in 1866. A steam tramway was introduced in Sydney in 1879.

Where was the first ever tram?

The word "tram" is widely accepted as being attributed to Benjamin Outram who built what became referred to as "tramways" in England. He became a noted railway engineer, credited with the first railways of a plateway (with the rails guiding the wheels rather than the wheels having a flange to guide themselves) of his design, termed a "tramway". This was built in area of Derbyshire in England in 1790.
