The first section opened in 1863, and was the first underground railway system in the world. The 250 miles of the current network has been extended over the last 146 years, the most recent extension of note being the 1999 extension of the Jubilee line from Green Park to Stratford.
The metropolitain line, which origonally ran between pread street (the station that is now paddington on the hammersmith and city line) and Farringdon.
That stretch of line is the oldest on the London underground.
The first truly deep tube line was the Waterloo and city, however. The metropolitain was constructed with 'cut and cover' methods.
Its first line was opened in 1863, making the London Underground the oldest underground in the world. Some of its stations were used as air-raid shelters in WW2.
*Addition - The Boston subway starting moving passengers in 1897.
