The platypus is not extinct. It is considered common, but vulnerable, in the only country in which it lives, which is Australia (including Australia's island state of Tasmania). It has never become totally extinct yet; nor has it ever been officially endangered. At one time, numbers were critically low due to the demand for the platypus's velvety pelt, but when official protection measures were brought in, its numbers saw a resurgence. It is now illegal to hunt them.

There is no way to predict when any species will become extinct, especially when that species is not even classified as "endangered".

The platypus is not endangered. There was a time when the platypus was under threat, being particularly prized for its fur years ago. In the past it came closer to extinction but it now has protection by law in the National Parks and Wildlife Act of 1974 (from hunters and fishermen), and the population has grown back to a healthy size. There are now believed to be around the same number of platypuses as there were at the time when Europeans first settled in Australia.

Platypuses are now strictly protected by law. The Australian Government lists the platypus as "common but vulnerable". The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the platypus as "least concern". The platypus is vulnerable because of habitat loss through deforestation, dams and irrigation projects. They have disappeared from South Australia. There are concerns regarding the destruction of their habitat and awareness of this problem is increasing. The use of fishing nets is still something of a problem, even though it is illegal now to use fishing nets in freshwater rivers and creeks, as the platypuses can become entangled.

Tasmanian platypuses are subject to a disease caused by the fungus Mucor amphibiorum, which has fortunately not migrated to the mainland. Affected animals often develop skin lesions or ulcers, and the biggest threat to their survival arises from secondary infection. This can affect the platypus's ability to maintain body temperature and to hunt properly for food on the bottom of rivers and creeks.

As long as the platypus remains protected by law, it stands an excellent chance of avoiding extinction.

Platypuses do not even qualify as threatened, although they are unofficially "vulnerable". Although very delicate creatures, sensitive to ecological changes and habitat loss, their distribution is still much the same as it was prior to European settlement, apart from in South Australia where they were wiped out last century (like many native species), being hunted for their fur. The platypus is now a completely protected species.

Tasmanian platypuses are subject to a fungal disease which certainly threatens platypuses in that state, but mainland platypuses are currently free of the disease.

Is any species of platypus going extinct?

There is only one species of platypus - ornithorhynchus anatinus - and it is not going extinct. Though elusive and rarely seen, platypus numbers are believed to have recovered to about e same population as they enjoyed prior to European settlement. Protective legislation has done much to ensure the platypus does not become extinct.

What animals are in the same family as a platypus?

The platypus belongs to the family Ornithorhynchidae, which includes only one other species: the echidna. Echidnas, also known as spiny anteaters, share similar characteristics with platypuses such as laying eggs and having a unique combination of mammalian and reptilian features.

What sort of animals are being extinct?

Is the platypus almost extinct?

No. The platypus is neither "almost extinct", nor "endangered". It is one of the few Australian animals which has made a remarkable comeback from near-extinction early in the twentieth century, to reach around the same population as it had prior to European settlement.

Are there any extinct types of platypus?

Yes. Fossil evidence has shown that there was once a giant species of platypus which had teeth, unlike modern platypuses which only have grinding plates. This giant species was very similar to the modern platypus in every other way.

What is platypus frog?

The platypus frog is also known as the Gastric brooding frog. It is listed as extinct because there have been no sightings of either of the two species in the genus since 1981. The platypus was unique because the young were incubated in the stomach of the female.

What is the platypus' country of origin?

Australia. They come from Australia. They lived for about 20 years before they became extinct. Its quite shocking that the TV show "Phineas and Ferb" used Platypus as their pet.

What is causing the platypus to become extinct?

Nothing is causing the platypus to become extinct. Platypus numbers in the wild are much the same as they were prior to European habitation of the Australian continent. However, platypuses were in danger of extinction in the early twentieth century due to hunting for their fur and pelts, but since becoming a protected species, numbers have increased (except in South Australia). Platypus were also in danger from fish-netting, as they became entangled in the nets and died, but this is also less of a problem in modern times.

Will the platypus be extinct or endangered in the future?

It is possible that, sometime in the future, platypuses may be endangered. However, it is most unlikely to happen anytime soon. The platypus has quite a secure future. Although vulnerable to habitat loss and changes brought about by human interference, the platypus has enjoyed a resurgence in its population since becoming a protected animal. There are estimated to be as many platypuses now as there were when European settlement started.
