Sorry i am still an amateur. The function of a total station in a construction site have various use. Some of the most common are COGO, mapping & stake-out. But the first and foremost of total station is to measure angle & distance, which can then be calculated coordinates (XYZ or NEZ)
My suggestion is to attend a training course designed for your particular requirements, which relates to the instrument in question. What is your definition of 'surveying'? Is it collecting a few points on a site, or laying down a large traverse with multiple setups and observation sets? Although operating manuals are available on line, there is no substitute for one to one teaching with hands on experience. Should you require such a course just Google Phoenix Surveying Equipment uk. Good luck.
Error message displayed when an internal problem presits. You have to turn off and then back ON total station just before starting to operate...If the problem was not fixed this way you have to send your instrument for repair.

It was actually I who invented it as a way to work alone since I did not like my layout/survey partner. C.A.M.

To survey with a total station, set up the instrument properly on a stable tripod, then level it using the built-in bubble level. Select the surveying mode, aim the telescope at the target, and record the horizontal and vertical angles along with the distance measurement. Repeat this process for multiple points to create an accurate survey of the area.

theodolite or total station is what you usually see a surveying looking through and is the instrument on top of the tripod. A total station instrument records location points, point of driveways, property corners, building corners and anything that is on the survey map. Points are coordinates in x, y, and z format. X and Y are north and east, and the Z coordinate is straight up (elevation). Many total stations have an EDM (Electronic Distance Measuring Equipment) feature that also measures from the instrument to the rod the user is locating. Typical tools that land surveyors use are tape measures, metal detectors (magnetic locators to locate ferrous metal property corner pins), various hand tools like brush axe and sledge hammer for driving property corners into the ground. EngineerSupply has a nice selection of surveying equipment which will give you an idea of the type of equipment and tools land surveyors use.
