The lower layer is Bromoform, tribromomethane CHBr3 with the highest density (2.889 g/cm3), almost three times greater than of water.

Trick:

To simply find out if water is the lower or upper layer in a two-layer fluid system, you can

  • add carefully one drop of water at the top of the liquid
  • watch accurately the path of the falling drop and when it does 'dissolve'

Then:

  • when going down through the upper layer, then it will 'dissolve' in the lower, you may conclude the upper layer is NOT water.

    Or

  • when 'dissolving' immediately in the upper layer then you'll conclude the upper layer is water.

In a mixture of water and bromoform, the bromoform would be on the bottom since its density (2.89 g/mL) is much larger than water's density (1.00 g/mL).

If you shake it, it will be an "emulsion", but if you let it sit for a while, there will be a layer of water at the bottom of the jar, and a layer of oil above the water.

In a cyclohexane water mixture what is the bottom layer?

water because it has a higher density than cyclohexane

Why the bottom layer of the ocean the coldest?

Cold water sinks, while warm water rises.

Where does the largest temperature change occur in the mixed layer and why?

At the bottom of the mixed layer, because this is where the mixed layer is seperated from the calm deep water below it.

Does bromine dissolve in water?

Being miscible means that it can form a homogeneous solution when added with another liquid. Bromoform is immiscible with water. It is however, miscible with the chemical cyclohexane.

How the upper layer of the atmosphere differ from bottom layer?

The upper layer is different from the bottom layer because the bottom layer has more gualities to a living thing than the upper layer.

Water and chloroform are mixedthe components separate into two layerseach of which smells strongly of chloroformHow would you quickly and easily confirm which layer is water and which is chloroform?

Always the bottom layer will be of chloroform and upper layer of water due to difference in the density.
