The year 1922 is considered the date upon which gummy bears were invented.
Specifically the rubbery-textured, jelly baby-like, bear-shaped candy was invented by candy maker Johannes Peter "Hans" Riegel (b. March 10, 1923). Riegel is the oldest son and heir of Hans Riegel Sr. (April 3, 1893 - March 31, 1945), the founder of the Haribo confectionary company of Bonn. The company, whose name is an acronym for "Hans Riegel, Bonn," was started in 1920 and today is known worldwide for its licorice and jellied sweet desserts. To this day, the company's most profitable product remains the gummy bears.
Percy Trusdale was an inventor who created the first gum drops in 1801, making them 212 years old. In the beginning there were only a select few flavors and colors, but as time passed the technology has evolved to allow a wide variety of tastes.

No they just call them gum drops because it has the properties of gum like chewiness
First off, the candy coating is made out of sugar, corn syrup, flavorings, and coloring. These are mixed in in large vats. This is heated and stirred... The middle is regular bubble gum. When the mixture (above) is heated, cooled, and cut into strips, it is wrapped around the bubble gum and put on a stick.
