Sugar cookies were made by Ruth Keller. She owned a restaurant and was trying to make a cake but something went wrong. She had to serve something so she tasted one and sent it out. Now sugar cookies are one of Americas favorite baked goods.

The sugar cookie, at least what modern society thinks of when they think of "sugar cookie", has been around since the mid-1700s, where it was first made by Protestant settlers in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. The first sugar cookies were made somewhere around the 7th century AD in the Middle East by a baker who used them to test the temperature of his oven and then sold the tiny cakes, or cookies.

Girl Scouts first started selling cookies in 1917 as a way to finance troop activities, so you could say that the girls themselves "invented" Girl Scout cookies!
