It was in March 2009 when the illness broke out in a small town in southern Mexico. La Gloria has about 3,000 people, and it is now believed the first human cases of the Novel H1N1 Influenza may have started there. However, although a particular pig farm in Mexico was thought to have perhaps had the first case of the flu among pigs, the Mexican government tested and found no evidence of that at the farm. It is now believed that the first case among pigs was more likely at a different farm in Texas.

The first known person to have contracted the 2009 H1N1 Influenza was a young boy named Edgar Hernandez from La Gloria. He survived the virus.

In March and early April in 2009, cases of Swine Flu were first reported in the US in Southern California and near San Antonio, Texas.

The answer to this is still not entirely known. It may have spread undetected as a new strain while infecting people for months in Mexico before really identified for what it was, perhaps beginning as far back as January 2008. There may have been two children in the US with the disease in early March 2009, but that is not confirmed by laboratory testing.

The first officially reported case was discovered in Mexico City on March 18, 2009, while there were probably hundreds of other people infected at the same time in a so-called "Silent Epidemic". At that point is when Mexico City was virtually closed and the world was made aware of the epidemic.

This A-H1N1/09 strain of virus has also been tracked back to a child from a small village in Mexico (where there was close proximity to hog farms) as the possible first infected individual in Mexico. The village was La Gloria, a small town in southern Mexico. La Gloria has about 3,000 people, and it is now believed the first human cases of the Novel H1N1 Influenza may have started there months before it was known to be a new strain. The earliest person (among those in that first village) that seems to have been infected with the "Novel Swine Flu" was a young boy named Edgar Hernandez from La Gloria. He survived the virus.

The first officially reported case in the US was diagnosed on April 14, 2009 in a child in San Diego County in California. There has been no link made between this child and any contact with pigs. But the Novel H1N1 strain was confirmed, and then again several days later in another child in a town not far from the first case in the San Diego county area.

The first person to die from the 2009 swine flu was Maria Adela Gutierrez, a 39-year old woman in the southern tourist city of Oaxaca in Mexico. The first person outside of Mexico to die was a baby from Mexico city, who died in Houston, Texas, USA.

Should you get a Swine Flu vaccination if you got a seasonal flu shot?

Last flu season, 2009-2010, you needed two shots. But this year the seasonal flu shot also protects against swine flu, so, in the US, you only need one flu shot for the 2010-2011 flu season.

What type of virus is the H1N1 classified as?

It is a Type A Influenza virus with RNA genome. Also called Swine Flu, the 2009 Pandemic Flu, 2009 Swine Flu, and A-H1N1/09.

Who generally gets Swine Flu?

Anyone who has not had a flu vaccination each year since the pandemic and/or has not already had illness from the exact strain of flu as the pandemic swine flu. The annual flu vaccine has contained the H1N1/09 swine flu since the first regular flu season (in 2010 - 2011) after the discovery of the new strain in 2009. In the 2009 - 2010 flu season, a second vaccination against swine flu was required to be taken, in addition to the regular seasonal flu vaccination, to be immune. See the related question below for a list of those mostly likely to get, and have complications from, the 2009 swine flu (if they have not been vaccinated).

Where was Swine Flu last reported?

They don't record it anymore, now a flu is just a flu.
