The Book of Exodus is a composite work, largely based on two different sources now known as the Yahwist or "J Source", and the Elohist or "E Source", with some later additions by the Priestly or "P Source".
The Yahwist lived around the ninth century BCE and represented the traditions of the southern kingdom of Judah. As far as he was concerned, the land promised to the Israelites comprised the south alone - he was not concerned with the kingdom to his north. His hero, Caleb, represented the tribe of Judah.
The Elohist was contemporary with the Yahwist, or perhaps a little later and represented the traditions of the northern kingdom of Israel.
The early J and E material seems to have been collected and put together by an editor to create the JE source material, which was probably put into manuscript form in the seventh century BCE by an anonymous author now known as the Deuteronomist ("D Source). The Priestly author came somewhat later, probably during the Babylonian Exile.

Exodus is primarily about the escape of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt, dealing with the general themes of the superiority of their God over the Gods of Egypt. It is one of the earliest stories dealing with the direct conflict between monotheists and polytheists.
