Although the Book of Genesis is not believed to be the first book of The Bible to be written in much the form we see today, it probably does contain some of the earliest written material in the Bible. Genesis is beleived to have had three main authors, all of them anonymous. The authors are now known as the Yahwist ('J' source), Elohist ('E' source) and the Priestly source ('P' source). The earliest of these sources are the Yahwist and the Elohist.

The Yahwist is believed to have written during the ninth century BCE. The Elohist must have written during the eighth or ninth century BCE. Thus the earliest material in the Bible was already written down quite early in the first millennium BCE.

The Priestly source added further material, probably during the sixth century BCE, and the Redactor subsequently edited the book into much the same form as we see today.

The Book of Exodus has a similar history to Genesis, although the material is perhaps not as old. The Deuteronomist also collated and wrote the Books of Deuteronomy and the Deuteronomic History during the seventh century BCE. The prophets Micah and Isaiah wrote during the eighth century BCE.

The last books of the Old Testament were written during the second century BCE.
