Never! The population of Nauvoo has never been 45,000. At the height of the Mormon population there in 1844, there were about 12,000 Mormons. Recent stastics show just over 1,000 people live there today.

How many Mormons fled Nauvoo IL?

Somewhere between 16,000 and 20,000 Mormons fled Nauvoo, Illinois in 1846 and 1847. It is nearly impossible to count exactly how many fled, as many stayed behind for months or years in an attempt to sell their property for a fair price, and still others stayed because they did not agree with the leadership of Brigham Young.

What does the Potawatomi Indians and the Mormons have in common?

When the Mormons had to flee Nauvoo, Illinois in 1846, they crossed the Mississippi river into Iowa (near Kanesville/Council Bluffs). At the time this was tribal land belonging to the Potawatomi Indians, but the tribe gave the Mormons permission to stay there. My source is listed below under "Related Links".
