Before Hawaii and Alaska was included as states, only the "Lower 48" states had stars in the flag. This was changed in 1959, when they were both exepted into the union, Alaska on the 3rd of January, and Hawaii on the 21st of August.

Hawaii joined the US in August 1959 as the 50th state and the new 50 star flag became official on July 4th 1960.
