As Google.com is the most visited site on the entire internet, they are not able to phase out support for something until well under 2% of their customer base still uses it - and even then, they are reluctant to do so. IE6 still has a solid 15% of the market last I checked (IE 6, 7, and 8 combined are finally UNDER the 50% mark though!). Google's search engine does not shun new features in favor of old support, however. Users of older browsers get a slightly degraded experience (and can't use gmail or similar without using the bare bones HTML mode) when using a google service, and I doubt that will ever change. The search engine even works in text-based browsers such as lynx, and you'll be very, very hard pressed to find people using those unless they broke all of their other browsers (which I've done...) - Google has all of their bases covered.
