There is no published plan or date for television broadcasts to be HD anywhere in the UK or Europe. However, HD is different to digital. Digital television is replacing analogue broadcasting and by 2012, all analogue transmitters will be turned off. The replacement is Freeview, the digital equivalent of the analogue system with many more channels added. At present, in 2009, Freeview is available throughout almost the whole of the UK. It is up to each householder to obtain a Freeview set top box or digital television before the local analogue transmitter is turned off. The analogue switch off is already in progress. HDTV offers higher resolution and is available on Sky, FreeSat and in the future, on Freeview. There is no compulsion to have HD and standard definition channels will be around for many many years to come.

Can your full HDTV receive freeviewhd?

Freeview is the free terrestrial digital television service in the UK. 2010 is the year that it will introduce HD broadcasts. Most UK televisions sold since 2008 have a freeview tuner built in but it is only televisions sold from 2010 onwards that are likely to have an HD freeview tuner built in. The manual for the television will tell you whether it has an HD tuner. If it doesn't, it is still possible to get HD broadcasts on Freeview by purchasing an HD set top box.

How do you get HD channels on your TV?

High definition television is available in the UK from four sources at present. Sky provides a satellite service and offers around 20 or so HD channels. An HD Sky receiver is required to receive the HD channels. Sky can be obtained anywhere in the UK. Virgin Media is the cable provider for the UK, having merged several smaller operators over the last few years. Virgin offer a similar number of HD channels. Because cable has not been installed to every home in the UK, it is not always possible to obtain the Virgin service. Both Sky and Virgin are subscription services and require a monthly fee to benefit from the HD output. Freesat on the other hand is a free to air service and can be received once a dish and receiver have been bought and installed. Satellite based, it is available throughout the UK. There is a small but growing list of HD channels on the HD platform. Finally, Freeview, the free to air terrestrial service has HD channels available in most parts of the country. Two final points: Free television services in the UK are dependent on having a TV licence, renewable each year. The licence fee is the main funding for the BBC but allows any television broadcast to be received.

How do i improve picture quality on my HD tv if i have freeview built in?

Freeview is the UK's terrestrial television service and as the name implies, provides subscription free broadcasting. In 2010 it began to offer HD services as well as SD. Many HD televisions include a Freeview receiver but is is only in 2010 onwards that they began to include an HD Freeview receiver. If the HD television is 2010 or earlier it probably does't have an HD receiver To improve the quality of image, an HD freeview set top box can be added to enable the HD channels to be received. As far as SD channels are concerned, don't expect to see any noticeable improvement in quality. The built in receiver in the television will generate exactly the same signal as the external receiver on all SD channels.

Do you need cable box for HD tv?

If you mean free Over the Air (OTA) TV using an antenna: 1) If you have an HD TV set, you don't need any kind of special box. 2) If you don't have an HD TV set, but your TV set has a digital tuner, you don't need a special box, but you will see the HD picture converted to a Standard Definition (SD) picture. 3) If you don't have an HD TV set and your TV set does not have a digital tuner, you will need a converter box. The converter box will convert the HD broadcasts to SD so your TV can display them. If you mean cable TV, it depends on your cable provider and your TV. If you don't have an HD TV, at best you will see an HD signal converted to SD. If your TV has a digital tuner and it is also a QAM tuner, you might be able to receive some HD channels without a box if your cable company chooses to provide unscrambled HD channels. If your TV has an analog tuner or a digital tuner without QAM, you will need some sort of box.
