When would a couple seek genetic counseling?

Genetic counseling is a very expensive process. Usually couples only seek it out when they believe that there is a genetic disease in one of their families that could end up affecting their child. The would conceive and a genetic test would be formed on the fetus. After the results came back there would be time to decide whether to continue with the pregnancy or abort because the genetic disease has been found.

For couples who are having are having a child or considering having children, there are a number of different reasons to see a genetic counselor.

- because of a family history of a genetic condition such as cystic fibrosis

- because the couple had a previous child with specific chromosomal abnormality such as Down syndrome

- because one of the parents carries a change in their chromosomes

- because the pregnancy is at risk for a genetic condition

- because of concerns about exposures (e.g. medications) during pregnancy

- because their was a previous child of the couples or the couple who had a neural tube defect such as spina bifida

- because the pregnancy screened positive on first trimester or second trimester screen

- because of an abnormality seen on ultrasound
