Not everyone believes the same about suicide.

Catholics, and Protestants who believe in the theory of mortal sin, would say no, a person who commits suicide cannot go to Heaven.

According to the Holy Roman Church, a mortal sin is a grievous offense committed with full knowledge and consent of the will, and if it is not confessed and absolved the sinner will go to Hell. There is no way a person who committed suicide could confess and absolve, so he will go to Hell.

Protestant religions who claim anyone who believes on the Lord and is saved will go to Heaven, which presumably means if you're a Christian in one of those churches and you kill yourself, you're going to Heaven. To this I can only say, read Matthew 7:21.

Clarification of the Catholic beliefs on suicide:

Mortal sin

Regarding being in a state of mortal sin, the Catechism of the Catholic Church lays down three conditions - all of which must be met:

"For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: "Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent."(paragraph 1857). If any one of these conditions is not fulfilled, there is no state of mortal sin. In paragraph 1860 the Catechism goes on to list some of the things which can reduce consent: feelings, passion, mental disorders and external pressure.

Most importantly, paragraph 1861 states: "Mortal sin is a radical possibility of human freedom, as is love itself....However, although we can judge that an act is in itself a grave offense, we must entrust judgment of persons to the justice and mercy of God." In other words, although Catholicism believes that freedom means it is possible for a person to reject God's love and forgiveness, the Church refuses to say that there is anyone in Hell; that is known only to God.

As to suicide itself the Catechism states:

"Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide." (paragraph 2282)

"We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives." (paragraph 2283)

Again, the Catholic Church places strict conditions on being truly responsible; even then the Church leaves open the possibility of Heaven.

Bearing these things in mind, it would be argued that a person who habitually considers suicide is not in a healthy emotional state because the instinct of self preservation is one of the most basic humans possess. A depressed emotional state reduces a person's freedom and thus culpability. If mental illness is added to the scenario, then the level of responsibility (and thus freedom) is even more greatly diminished. In short, from the perspective of Catholicism (and probably most religions) a person who suffers from a mental illness (or even depression) does not have a sufficient amount of freedom for the act of suicide to be considered a sin. Therefore, it is unimaginable that God would keep such a person from entering heaven.

Another answer.Nobody actually knows if you go to heaven when you drown yourself. There is no physical evidence that heaven exist. To be clear, I'm not saying heaven does not exist, I am saying that believing it's real is a choice to have faith. Someone can only give you their opinion or best guess about if you can go to heaven when you drown yourself. Only you can decide what you believe is true based on faith.

The fact is that regardless of how you drown, you will be dead.

Biblical Answer:

John 3:13New King James Version (NKJV)

13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.

Catholic AnswerThe Catholic teaching regarding suicide is very clear: everyone is responsible for his life before God who has given it to him. It is God who remains the sovereign Master of life. We are obliged to accept life gratefully and preserve it for his honor and the salvation of our souls. We are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of..

Voluntary suicide and co-operation in suicide is contrary to the moral law. (all of the above is taken from paragraphs 2280-2283 of the Catechism..

Please do not think that God's mercy extends past your death, His justice comes into play and He must be judge, if you transgress His laws, you pay the price - eternally. As our life is not our own, it belongs to the one who gave it to us. This is difficult for modern people to accept from several angles. For instance, it is difficult to admit that our whole being is contingent on another, and is not our own. It is difficult to realize that we are asked to face our problems and that we can not just "check out" if we find the going too rough. It is very difficult to realize that this "solution" to life's problems is not only NOT a solution but actually makes things much worse as we are faced with losing our salvation, and that is not just a rough day, a rough year, or even a rough lifetime, that is an unbelievably miserable eternity of suffering..

Anyone who is faced with considering suicide as an option must realize not only that it is NOT an option, but that things are not nearly as bad or as bleak as he or she thinks they may be. I would urge anyone in such a situation to pick up the telephone right now and contact the local rectory or Catholic Church office. If there is no answer, contact the diocesian office and explain the problem. If you can not get help from any of these sources, immediately call the suicide hotline:.

In the U.S., call 1-800-273-8255. Remember that there are people praying for you right now, and there are all the saints and angels in heaven doing the same. Every single person on this earth has a guardian angel assigned just to them. And one guardian angel is so powerful that they, alone, could destroy the whole world. That guardian angel loves you and has been assigned by God to nothing else then to look out for you. Say a prayer right now to whoever is your Guardian Angel, and ask for their help. Remember that they are not physical being. The help you receive will be mental and spiritual but it will be the help that you need to do the right thing - so pick up that phone!

In the Ten Commandments that Moses received from God on Mt. Sinai, the fifth commandment said thou shall not kill. This also refers to yourself. But, it is not your choice to decide if a man or woman will go to heaven or hell. It is God's choice and not yours. If someone who has committed suicide have lived a good life, it might be possible that he or she would still go to heaven, but they would have to spend a very long time in Purgatory.

Also, when Jesus was asked what the most important commandment was he said "Love God with all your heart mind and spirit". He then said, "And the second commandment is to love your neighbor as your self". I take this to mean that you should also love your self. Suicide is the ultimate self-hatred.
